Whether you want to look chic at your office Christmas party or fashion-forward at a family gathering, celebrity stylist Karla Birbragher comes to the rescue with holiday style tips. “For New Year’s Eve, everyone gets a little more dressed up, especially if you’re ringing in the new year at a party. Velvet is one of the hottest trends this season,” she tells PEOPLE CHICA. A plush velvet slip dress can be accessorized with “a faux fur stole, pom pom drop earrings, and white booties to tie in the look and give it that wow factor,” she adds.
The Target spokesperson — whose famous clients include her husband, Telemundo TV host Jorge Bernal, and TV host Rashel Diaz — also offered advice on how to impress at the office holiday party. “Ruffled detail is a trend we have been seeing nonstop,” she says, so a ruffled blouse with tassel earrings is a winning combination.
To add some flare to the extended-family dinner party, Birbragher recommends a satin cami with crepe jogger pants, a tassel necklace and a ruffle heel. “This outfit works great for a family gathering. It’s stylish, edgy and also very comfortable, which is important if you are running around after the little ones. I don’t recommend wearing pieces that are uncomfortable or too short. My family gatherings always include playing with the kids, and cleaning up after everyone, so I always make sure to dress cute and kid-friendly.”
The Panamanian fashion expert, who is working on her own YouTube channel for 2018, recommends wrap dresses for the ladies who want to appear trimmer. “They are extremely flattering on any body type,” she says. “Black is also a great color choice. Its elegant and sleek and makes you look thinner.” If you prefer to step out in rojo, she suggests updating the seasonal staple: “Red is always a favorite for the holidays but this year take your look to the next level by mixing and matching different shades of red.”
Although it’s good to be daring, Birbragher warns against a common faux pas. “Avoid wearing too many trends at once. I would stick to one and make the rest of your outfit simple and clean,” she says.
The busy fashion maven enjoys a little downtime at the end of the year. “We have all of our family over for Christmas Eve dinner, then we all get into our matching pajamas and wake up Christmas morning listening to Christmas music while we have breakfast and open gifts,” she shares. “We love December and so do the kids,” she says of Lucas, 7, and Kylie, 3. “The Elf on the Shelf is another Christmas tradition that we have been doing since the kids were born, and they enjoy it so much. It’s our favorite time of the year!”
